A Voice for S.M.A.R.T Solutions
Donni sponsored 15 bills since being elected as state representative. See the full breakdown on how she is actively implementing her policy plan as your S.M.A.R.T choice.
Security and Public Safety
-
Law enforcement is essential in emergencies, being the first to respond and the last to leave the scene.
We rely on local, state, and federal law enforcement daily. Making sure they are properly funded and supported is crucial to maintaining a safe community.
-
Everyone should feel safe in their community, which is why I sponsored HB4093. This legislation requires individuals convicted of serious felonies to serve at least 85% of their prison sentences, reinforcing public safety and accountability in the criminal justice system.
-
I proposed a bill to update sentencing guidelines for firearms-related offenses to ensure stricter penalties and enhance public safety by imposing more rigorous consequences for dangerous criminal behavior. (HB 5152)
-
Senior citizens, too, deserve better treatment. Unfairly taxing their pensions, which are already subject to taxation during their working years, adds unnecessary financial strain.
Michigan Education
-
I voted in favor of SB 166, the FY 26 School Aid Budget, because it delivers a strong increase in per-pupil funding that our schools desperately need. This budget is a clear investment in our students, our teachers, and the future of our state, giving local districts the resources to reduce class sizes, support educators, and improve classroom materials and student services.
I believe every child deserves access to a well-funded, high-quality public education, and by supporting this increase in per-pupil funding, I stood up for families and communities across Michigan who rely on strong public schools.
-
I was proud to vote in favor of HB 4141 that will require Michigan’s public school districts to adopt policies banning student smartphone use during instructional time.
By supporting this measure, I helped advance a commonsense solution to reduce classroom distractions and improve student focus, while still allowing exceptions for emergencies and medically necessary situations and giving schools flexibility to tailor policies for their communities.
-
Keeping schools accountable ensures our students' need are met while giving parents peace of mind about their child's education. In-depth evaluation of schools and teachers holds them responsible for their performance and quality of education.
By holding schools accountable for transparency guidelines, we ensure resources are used wisely and parents feel safe and comfortable in the education their child is getting.
-
I proudly voted in favor of HB 4066 and 4469 because I believe they take an important step toward protecting the integrity of high school athletics and ensuring fairness for our young women.
These bills require schools to designate separate teams based on biological sex and prevents males from competing on sports teams designated only for female athletes, giving girls the opportunity to compete where they feel most fairly matched and supported.
-
I co-sponsored HB 4090, which increases guidelines for safety and security measures in our schools. By expanding the training required for staff, we can make sure every teacher responsible for our children has the proper training for a crisis situation.
-
Educational freedom is vital in today's job market. While traditional college has been a success pathway, numerous alternatives like vocational training, apprenticeships, and certificate programs allow individuals to pursue careers that match their interests and skills without the financial strain of a four-year degree.
I fully support giving students the agency to choose paths that fit their career goals and personal circumstances.
Accountable Government
-
Small businesses flourish when they operate freely, with less government oversight.
It's evident that fostering competitive competition and minimizing overreach is vital for their success. By allowing small businesses to thrive in such an environment, Michigan can attract and retain the talent necessary to reclaim its position as a leading economic state.
-
As an elected official, I know firsthand the great responsibility I have to the people of Michigan. Establishing clear rules for appropriations would ensure that legislators adhere to strict guidelines for responsible governance. That is why I sponsored HB 5296, which would improve legislative transparency and accountability.
-
I introduced HB5427, which refines the efficiency and transparency of Michigan's legislative processes by establishing new guidelines for managing legislative records and documents.
-
The same rules should apply across the state, ensuring that all citizens are treated equitably and justly. When laws and regulations are applied consistently and transparently, they foster trust in public institutions and promote a sense of community.
Fairness in governance not only protects individual rights but also encourages civic engagement and accountability, ultimately contributing to the stability and prosperity of society as a whole.
Roads and Infrastructure
-
As Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Local Transportation, I was proud to sponsor legislation that played a key role in Michigan’s FY 2026 budget and helped deliver a $3 billion increase in road funding statewide, including a significant increase to the Neighborhood Roads Fund.
I helped secure a meaningful, long-term investment in the local roads people rely on every day. From driveway to highway, this funding will improve safety, strengthen local communities, and give cities and towns the resources they need to finally fix and maintain their roads.
-
During the budget season in both 2023 and 2024, I proposed to spend general funding on local roads, rather than pet projects.
Investing in our infrastructure is crucial for economic growth and improving community well-being. Properly allocated resources can ensure the roads are maintained without increasing cost to the taxpayer.
These improvements not only create jobs in the short term but also lay the groundwork for sustained development, attracting businesses and improving the quality of life for residents.
Transparency
-
Legislators should be held accountable to their constituency and the people of Michigan, especially when handling taxpayer money.
HB4751 would fortify legislative transparency by requiring lawmakers to adhere to stricter transparency guidelines during the appropriation bill process.
-
My House Bill 5812 would strengthen the tax settlement process in Michigan by updating administrative procedures to reflect the repeal of the State Real Estate Transfer Tax Act, thereby simplifying tax administration and promoting efficiency and transparency for taxpayers
-
My HB 5091 would strengthen transparency and accountability by expanding Michigan’s Public Officers Financial Disclosure Act to require annual, detailed financial disclosures from county commissioners and county executives in the state’s largest counties. Currently, only state legislators and certain statewide elected officials must file these reports; HB 5091 would extend these requirements to local leaders in counties with populations over 150,000.
